Lemongrass, A Restaurant Review

22 Apr

I had a hot food blogger date with Dawn from Florida Coastal Cooking today.  I was so excited when Ashlee introduced us because Dawn is a fellow FSU Alum!  Jacksonville is very much in the “Gator Nation” (I hate that term.  The “Gator Nation” would be a jorts wearing, mullet sporting, third world country, in my opinion), and finding fellow ‘Noles is always good thing!

We tried out Lemongrass, a Thai Restaurant.  Lemongrass is actually owned by the same people as Thai Room, and so I had some lofty expectations going into the restaurant.  I got a little scared when I walked in at 1:30 and it was practically empty.  Being in a restaurant all by yourself can be a little unnerving.

Thankfully, Dawn showed up a few minutes later and we quickly got to chatting.  We ordered some fresh spring rolls to start:

I felt like such a food blogging failure when I whipped out my camera and the batteries were dead.  Fail!  Thankfully, I always have my iPhone around to function as a backup.  The spring rolls were crunchy and the vegetables tasted very fresh.  It was nice to step outside the fried spring/egg roll box.  Also, the peanut sauce complimented the veggies perfectly!  But then again, you can put peanut sauce on pretty much anything and I’ll like it 😉

I know I talk all the time about my love affairs with specific foods, but seriously, I love pad thai.

The flavor was absolutely amazing, but I wish it had a little more veggies in it.  If I threw in some julienne carrots and broccoli, it would’ve been perfection on a plate.

Overall, the Lemongrass was very appetizing.  I’ll definitely keep it on my list of close-to-work lunch spots!

The Casbah – Restaurant Review

12 Apr

A little late is better than never, right?

I’ve always been a huge fan of quick workouts on Friday night after work. I feel like they set the tone for the entire weekend, and I can feel a little less guilty for any weekend naughtiness. I went for a quick 3 miles in 34:55 Friday after work.

For dinner, we went to The Casbah in Riverside.  While we’ve been there a few times for the hookahs, I’d never eaten there before.  Hubby hamming it up with his foreign beer (I forgot what he ordered):

He’s such a nerd. I love it! The menu had a wide range of Mediterranean fare, and I quickly knew that falafel was going to be a MUST:

And hummus.  How dare I go to a Mediterranean place and not get hummus.  That would be blasphemy:

And the warmest, softest, yummiest pitas ever:

And Brooklyn Brown Ale:

And my entree – couscous and a chicken kabob:

All of this = FOOD COMA.

Everything was beyond excellent.  I love Mediterranean spices.  And in reality, its so healthy too (if you leave out the FRIED falafel).  Couscous was whole grains, the grilled kabob, healthy oils & fats in the hummus…. Tasty!

Thai Room, A Restaurant Review

31 Mar

Last night we took my mother-in-law to the Thai Room in Jacksonville Beach for her birthday, so I figured I’d do a little restaurant review.

We started off with some Crab Ragoons:

I didn’t eat any because A) I was saving all my calories for my entree and B) I don’t like crab!  Hubby and Mother-in-law swear up and down that its the best crab rangoons ever.  I guess I’ll just take their word for it!   I did indulge in a nice glass of Rodney Strong Chardonnay:

That? Impressed me.  It was so crisp, cool and not bitter at all.  Very smooth!  And I’m not even that big of a chardonnay fan.

I ordered Chicken Phad Thai:

Holy cow, it was delicious!  I wish it was just a hair spicier though.  Hubby got Chicken Fried Rice and it was excellent as well.

All in all, the food at Thai Room was great.   It just seemed a little overpriced in comparison to the other Thai restaurants I’ve visited.  Apparently, the pricing has gone up significantly in the past year, so who knows!
